A modern consumer unit with RCD protection watches every circuit in the house and cuts the power in a fraction of a second when something goes wrong. It is the single biggest safety upgrade most homes can have, and it usually takes Matthew two days: one testing what is already there, one fitting the new board.

Fair questions
How long does a fuse board change take?
Usually a single day, power off for part of it. Matthew tells you the plan the day before so you can sort the kettle and the wifi.
Is my old fuse box actually dangerous?
Not automatically, but rewireable fuses do not protect people, only wiring, and they do that slowly. Modern RCDs react roughly a hundred times faster than a human heartbeat.
